Short Stories | Fiction

phati’tude Literary Magazine’s has published and continues to seek short stories and fiction by some of the finest writers working in contemporary literature. We especially appreciate stories that are both well written and emotionally engaging, with special attention to character-driven stories that examine the depths and heights of emotion and motivation from a broad variety of cultural and social perspectives. We want to publish powerful stories that resonate in the minds and hearts of our readers long after the first reading, making them want to read it again and again.

“Short” is the operative word here. We cannot publish 40-60 page, 25,000 word manuscripts; nor will we be responsible for creating an excerpt from such a large body of work.  Before submitting your work, ask yourself whether your manuscript is fully ready for publication: Is the manuscript within the word count? Has it been spell checked and edited?

While all manuscripts are subject to proofreading and editing, we prefer not to engage in heavy editing, short of fixing typos, correcting grammar (unless used in dialogue) and adjusting punctuation to our house style.  The word count is 8,000 maximum.  Most short stories run with artwork designed to compliment the narrative.

As of January 2013, payment is one copy of phati’tude Literary Magazine and a PDF tear sheet of the short story is sent to the author. Send all inquiries to editor [at] phatitude.org

Refer to our Submission Guidelines and Open Call Submission for further information.
