phati’tude Literary Magazine welcomes the submission of books and book reviews for publication. phati’tude gives priority consideration to small publishers, self-published authors, academic presses, and specialty publishers. We specifically publish reviews of poetry, fiction, anthologies and literary criticism. We consider older books for review — generally no more than 3 years old.
Book Reviews for Publication
In order to determine whether or not we have not already published a review of the book you are considering reviewing, please search for the book’s title or author on our AUTHOR/ARTIST’S INDEX, “Book Reviews.” If we have not published a review , please send your inquiry to editor [at] phatitude.org, along with a sample book review for consideration.
We seek original book reviews with an honest assessment that does not rely wholly on press releases or other book reviews.
We do not want book reviews that consist mainly of a plot summary or an unsupported opinion of how well the reader did or did not like the book. Besides including information about the key elements of the book (plot, character, setting, theme, etc.), we want the reviewer’s opinion of how well the author has succeeded in using those elements to write an effective story. We also want reviewers to evaluate the book for interest, accuracy, objectivity, importance, thoroughness and usefulness to its intended audience. Other areas we would like reviewers to consider are:
- What is the setting and does it play a significant role in the work?
- Is a sense of atmosphere evoked, and how?
- What scenic/thematic effects are used and how important and effective are they?
- Does the setting influence or impinge on the characters and/or plot?
- What are the “intellectual qualities” of the writing (e.g., simplicity, clarity)?
- What are the “emotional qualities” of the writing (e.g., humor, wit, satire)?
- What are the “aesthetic qualities” of the writing (e.g., harmony, rhythm)?
- What stylistic devices are employed (e.g., symbolism, motifs, parody, allegory)?
- How effective is the dialogue?
Book reviews are 1,500 words. Payment is 2 copies of phati’tude Literary Magazine and reviewers may keep their review copies. If phati’tude is in possession of a review copy, we will mail the copy to the reviewer; if not, the editor will solicit a review copy from the publisher and have it sent directly to the reviewer by mail. We expect agreed-upon deadlines to be met, and all reviews are subject to proofreading and editing.
