Ekphrasis: A Conversation Between Poets & Artists
DEADLINE: August 15, 2010
Our Fall Issue concentrates on the art of “Ekphrasis.” Simply put, it means when a writer interprets a work of visual art and then creates a narrative in verse form that represents his or her reaction to that painting, photograph, sculpture or other artistic creation.
We have, at our disposal, 28 paintings that were juried by ArtSceneToday for their May 2010 competition:
E K P H R A S I S: Art that inspires poetry
2nd PLACE: Bayberry L. Shah/USA
3rd PLACE: Walt Curlee/USA
Entries came from across the US and around the world and were juried by J. MICHAEL WALKER, a Los Angeles artist, writer, curator and board member of Avenue 50 Studio, a cooperative gallery/arts presentation organization grounded in multicultural visual and performance art. Below are the paintings available for writers to interpret. The works can be poems or short prose pieces (500 words). Select which painting(s) you wish to interpret; you can submit up to five works (they can be for one painting or five different ones) in total. Make sure when you submit your work, you correlate each piece to the number we have provided for each painting. Hint: Click on the painting to view a close-up. If you right click on the painting, you can download it (save as) to print it so you can review it while composing your work.
Please read and follow our “Standard Submission Guidelines” process and become a part of another groundbreaking phati’tude issue!
